According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), home fires happen in winter more than any other season.. Heading into the cooler months, The Home Depot is raising awareness with fire safety events through Oct. 31., which also coincides with the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9-15.
The most common causes for home fires are cooking, heating, faulty wiring, and of course, candles and smoking. However, another growing concern is the way devastating residential fires disproportionately affect some communities.
Education, safety products, and systemic change are the most powerful tools for keeping you, your loved ones and your community safe. Now through the end of November 2022, for every Kidde alarm purchased at The Home Depot, a $1 contribution will be made toward alarm donations for communities in need. To get started with fire safety, there are several Kidde products available at The Home Depot.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home
The NFPA recommends placing smoke alarms in and outside all sleeping areas and on every floor of your home, including the basement. The easy-to-install Kidde Smoke Alarm comes with a sealed, lithium battery which has a 10-year lifespan (after that, it’s time to replace the entire unit, not just the battery). To cover more ground with a single purchase, you can buy Kidde Smoke Alarms bundled as a three-pack at The Home Depot.
Have a fire extinguisher on premises
Above all else, your top priority in any fire is getting everyone out safely. However, in the case of a small, contained fire, such as a trashcan (yes, like an actual garbage fire), an extinguisher can stop a fire from spreading — if you know how to operate it properly. The one-time use, 8.25- pound Kidde Fire Extinguisher with hose or 3.9-pound Kidde Basic Fire Extinguisher are both ABC rated for common combustibles, liquids, and electrical fires.
Get a reliable product that does double duty
Carbon monoxide (CO) leaks are another potential hazard in your home. To cover both fire and CO detection, you can purchase the Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm or a two-pack Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. The alarm comes ready to go and activates automatically when it’s attached to the mounting bracket. If there’s cause for concern, it will sound an alarm and provide voice alerts, even during a power outage.
