Attendees at D23 were treated to the official trailer for Willow. The series, which will be streaming on Disney+, is a sequel show to the 1988 film of the same name and sees Warwick Davis reprise his role as the titular Willow Ufgood.
The original saw Davis’ Willow go on a grand, high-fantasy adventure that « explodes beyond the boundaries of his own hopes and fears. » The movie also starred Val Kilmer as a mercenary who joins Willow on his quest, and Joanne Whalley as the princess who falls in love with Kilmer. The 1988 film had a lukewarm reception with critics but remained a cult classic due to Warwick’s performance and the film’s now legendary special effects.
The series has been in and out of the pipeline since 2005. Davis had been in discussions with George Lucas to develop a television show hoping to reprise his role as Willow. Discussions continued again around 2018, and then Disney greenlit the series for its streaming platform in 2020. Not much is known about the plot of the new series, but so far from the trailer, it seems that a new group of heroes along with the help of Willow and a returning Whalley, will go on a journey far beyond our imaginations.
Willow begins streaming on Disney+ on November 30.
