What we wouldn’t give to see those DMs: The special counsel looking into former president Donald Trump obtained a search warrant to search through the billionaire reality TV star’s Twitter account.
The prosecutors obtained the warrant as a part of their investigation into Trump’s alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results that made Joe Biden president. The warrant became public knowledge on Wednesday after a court filing was unsealed. It was signed by a federal judge in January, shortly after Elon Musk took over Twitter, which has now been rebranded as X.
Prosecutors even got permission from the judge to keep Trump in the dark in regards to the warrant over fears it would jeopardize the investigation by giving the former president, « an opportunity to destroy evidence, change patterns of behavior, [or] notify confederates. » The warrant was also serious enough that Musk’s then-Twitter was fined $350,000 because it was late in forking over information because it objected to not being able to tell Trump about the warrant.
Seeing the contents and behind-the-scenes of Trump’s Twitter account feels like it could produce lots of revelations — after all, he was once the platform’s most important user.
You’d be forgiven if you couldn’t remember all of the legal trouble Trump faces, since he’s been indicted three times. This indictment is in regards to the attempted overturning of the election, for which Trump faces four charges: Conspiracy to Defraud the United States, Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding, Obstruction of and Attempt to Obstruct an Official Proceeding, and Conspiracy Against Rights.
Time will only tell if the charges stick, but it’s looking likely that they will at least make some of Trump’s Twitter secrets public.
