Mark Zuckerberg announced a crucial update to the avatars of the metaverse on Tuesday: they will now be given legs. The Meta CEO said that these avatars – and their legs – will first be seen in Horizon Worlds, and later across Meta’s apps.
« Everyone has been waiting for this, » said Zuckerberg’s elevated avatar at yesterday’s Meta Connect developer event. « But seriously, legs are hard, which is why other virtual reality systems don’t have them either ».
The news is a step further in the development of avatars, allowing them to become a little more realistic and perhaps bringing us closer to Meta’s vision of future life in the metaverse. But for now, the big announcement has resulted in a range of trolling tweets, unhinged memes and even some thoughtful reactions.
Unsurprisingly, people are generally underwhelmed by the update, just as they seem to be about the metaverse itself. The same can be said for Meta’s employees, apparently.
