SOKOTO — The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has turbaned the Magajin Garin Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmed Bello Danbaba, as a Senior Councillor in the Sultanate Council, alongside 26 newly appointed District Heads, in a move aimed at strengthening traditional governance structures across the state.

The colourful ceremony, held at the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto, attracted prominent traditional rulers, government officials, Islamic scholars, and community leaders from across the state.

The appointments, which fill vacant district head positions in several communities, were approved by Governor Ahmed Aliyu as part of efforts to reinforce grassroots administration and community leadership.

Among those elevated, Danbaba was formally installed as Magajin Garin Sokoto and Senior Councillor—one of the most influential positions within the Sultanate hierarchy.

His elevation carries historical significance, as he is a descendant of Ahmadu Bello, the late Premier of the former Northern Region, whose legacy remains central to the political and cultural identity of Northern Nigeria.

Danbaba is also the eldest son of the late Alhaji Hassan Danbaba, a former Magajin Garin Sokoto and Senior Councillor, who served the Sultanate for many years.

Speaking at the event, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III charged the newly turbaned traditional rulers to uphold the values of fairness, integrity, and compassion in the discharge of their duties.

“You must be fair and just in dealing with your people,” the Sultan said, stressing that traditional rulers play critical roles in promoting peace, unity, and social stability within their communities.

He reminded them that their responsibilities extend beyond ceremonial roles, noting that district heads are custodians of culture and key actors in grassroots governance.

The Sultan also urged them to remain loyal to constituted authorities and support government initiatives in areas such as security, education, and socio-economic development.

He emphasised that effective collaboration between traditional institutions and government is vital to addressing contemporary challenges, particularly in rural communities.

The ceremony concluded with prayers for peace, stability, and continued progress in Sokoto State and the country, as dignitaries and well-wishers celebrated the newly installed custodians of traditional authority.
