The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has appealed to the Anambra State Government and traders in Onitsha Main Market, as well as other affected markets, to sustain dialogue for the eventual reopening of the markets closed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

UNIEC stressed that peace, not strife, is needed in Onitsha—the commercial hub of Anambra State—and across the South East to consolidate the improved security situation currently being witnessed in the region.

The elders therefore called for the immediate cessation of misunderstandings and backlash following Governor Soludo’s temporary closure of Onitsha Main Market, insisting that constructive dialogue is the only path forward.

In a statement signed by its Director General, His Lordship Justice Alpha Ikpeama, and National Director of Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe, titled “UNIEC Worldwide Affirms Its Support for Peace in Onitsha and Other Parts of Anambra State”, the group expressed satisfaction with the calm and restraint displayed by traders and stakeholders since the market was shut down.

The statement read:”The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide, acting in continuity with the long-established tradition of Igbo elders intervening at moments of communal strain to preserve peace, dialogue, and social cohesion, affirms its firm support for stability and constructive engagement in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State over the closure of Onitsha Main Market by the Anambra State Government.”

UNIEC commended the people of Anambra State, particularly traders and stakeholders in Onitsha, for their peaceful response to recent concerns involving the market closure, the weekly Monday sit-at-home observance, and the government’s actions.

The elders noted that such matters are not new sources of contention in Igbo communal life and have historically been resolved through consultation, mutual respect, and negotiated understanding. They stressed that the issues are neither irreconcilable nor beyond peaceful resolution and must not be allowed to escalate into tensions capable of undermining social harmony, economic activity, or public order.

“At this critical period in Igbo history, when unity, calm, and collective focus are indispensable, UNIEC cautions against any form of internal discord and reiterates that peaceful dialogue and restraint remain the most credible and enduring pathways to resolving differences,” the statement added.

The Council pledged to continue facilitating engagement among stakeholders to achieve de-escalation, reconciliation, and the prompt restoration of peace and normalcy. It confirmed that it is already in contact with relevant parties and will intensify efforts until a balanced, honourable, and sustainable resolution is achieved.

UNIEC therefore appealed to all sides to exercise restraint, prioritise dialogue, and cooperate fully with mediation efforts in the overriding interest of peace, unity, economic stability, and the shared future of Ndi Igbo and Anambra State in particular.
