The House of Representatives has called for urgent measures to address infrastructure deficiencies in the South East region.
Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas, represented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, made the appeal during the inauguration of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Committee at the National Assembly.
Abbas emphasized the commission’s role in revitalizing the region through targeted infrastructural development, economic growth, and social progress. He urged the committee, led by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, to ensure transparent and efficient use of funds for the region’s development.
“The commission must address gaps in infrastructure, support industries, foster peace, and improve lives,” Abbas stated.
Nkwonta highlighted the historic importance of the commission, aligning it with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Reintegration, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation (RRR) program.
The South East Development Commission Bill, passed in 2023 and 2024, symbolizes hope and progress, marking a significant step toward rebuilding the region after decades of challenges.
