Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has said that he sings in Yoruba because music transcends language barriers.

The 28-year-old singer made this known in a recent interview with ABC News.

He said the lyrics to music sometimes don’t need to be understood.

Asake sings predominantly in Yoruba and Pidgin, blending Fuji and Amapiano to achieve his style of afrofusion.

When asked why he retains Yoruba as the language of his songwriting,

He said, “Yoruba is so important to me and there are a lot of people that understand it. And to me, the way I understand music is like it’s a feeling. Sometimes you don’t even need to understand it.”

Asake also discussed the importance of connecting with the audience during his live performances.

He said he tries to create a better experience for fans than they would be exposed to while streaming his songs.

“Everybody is there for the same reason, to feel good music,” the singer added.

“You know, they have a connection, so they do what they have to do by jumping and screaming Asake.

“I have to do what I have to do and make sure they even enjoy the song more than what they are listening to on Apple Music.”

Asake was signed to the Olamide-owned label YBNL in February 2022, releasing ‘Ololade’, his debut EP.
